IAEP will be working hard to make licensure in Indiana possible for all of us. By working with the American Society of Exercise Physiologist (ASEP) we can make the licensing of exercise physiologists a reality in Indiana. ASEP supports licensure and wants to help by centralizing licensure efforts across the nation. ASEP will also support licensure by being recognized as a national organization for exercise physiologists. Other states have failed in attempts for licensure because other organizations that exercise physiologists often associate with are too multidisciplinary. This affiliation will add strength to the professionalization of exercise physiology in the United States, as well as providing a consistent and more powerful lobbying agenda for each state's specific needs.

Progress of Licensure in the State of Indiana
IAEP is working towards licensure in Indiana. This is a long process and requires the implementation of several key components before our efforts to pass a law will be successful. There are many steps necessary to make this important endeavor successful, and we are very busy working on them. There are three key elements, which the licensure committee is working on: certification, accreditation, and the licensure case.

Certification
It is imperative that Exercise Physiologist has a national organization that represents their needs and interests. Other states have failed in their attempt at licensure when they claimed a multidisciplinary organization was the professional EP organization. For this reason, the American Society of Exercise Physiologist (ASEP) Board Certified Exercise Physiologist examination has been selected as the test that will be tied to licensure. Indiana has hosted the exam on several occasions, and will continue to work to make the exam available.

Accreditation
ASEP has established academic accreditation for colleges and universities to ensure that educational requirements are met by institutions training Exercise Physiologists. The IAEP is working to identify all the EP educational programs in Indiana who may have the elements needed to be accreditated. Once these are identified, the IAEP will send information on accreditation to each school’s department chair explaining how accreditation and eventually licensure will affect their students in the job market and future careers.

Licensure Case
We are currently drafting a licensure law as well as working a building a case for licensure. This draft is based on a prior draft that was written in Indiana, as well as combining it with drafts from several other states. Additionally, a licensure case is currently being written. This is a very important element, as it must explain why licensure of the Exercise Physiologist is needed in Indiana. We are currently working to build a case that supports licensure. The case includes area such a safety, financial impact on the state, and many other issues.
